Fwd: Cygwin x86 end-of-life
Hi all,
FYI, long announced.
Regards,
Matthias
-------- Weitergeleitete Nachricht --------
Betreff: Cygwin x86 end-of-life
Datum: Fri, 11 Nov 2022 15:50:33 +0000
Von: Jon Turney <jo...@dronecode.org.uk>
An: cygwin-announce@cygwin.com
As has previously been announced, Cygwin is dropping support for x86
Windows. Cygwin 3.3.6 is the final version supporting x86 (32-bit)
Windows, and the forthcoming Cygwin 3.4 will be released for x86_64 only.
Concurrent with that, updates to x86 packages will be stopped, and the
Cygwin x86 package repository will be archived.
(Instructions on the special steps needed to install from that archive
will be forthcoming, once we've worked out what they are.)
If you're using x86 Cygwin under WOW64 on a 64-bit Windows OS, please
strongly consider moving to an x86_64 Cygwin installation.
(If you have ARM hardware, we believe that x86_64 Cygwin works correctly
using the x86_64 emulation in Windows 11)
If you're one of the tiny percentage of Cygwin users using x86 Cygwin on
a real x86 Windows OS, don't panic! The current installation will
continue to run on your system. You just won't get any more updates.

In fact it were three commits. ;-)
I somehow managed to get them merged and am building AOO41X right now
with Cygwin64.
Let's see what happens. I will open a PR then...

Thanks for the links Damjan!
Matthias could you try to build with Cygwin64 if these two commits are
back-ported into a test branch for 4.1.x?

We discussed that already a year (!) ago. Unfortunately I can't find the
list in my archive, but I am sure Damjan posted it.

It would be no big problem if we were ready to release AOO420...

If this exists and works, it should be committed ASAP.
It makes no sense at all to keep a separate 41X procedure that relies on a discontinued library if all branches can be compiled with a single an updated one.
Can any programmer review and commit this, please?

I will continue to build AOO41X with my installed Cygwin32. If it ever
breaks on my VM, I will *not* repair it.
Damjan posted the needed patches to build AOO41X with Cygwin64, if
anyone wants to commit them...

For AOO41X we are somehow stuck with Cygwin32. So it will allow us to
build but it will not get updates anymore.
> It would only be a problem if our builds had to be compiled in a x86 OS?
Basically this isn't a problem since beginning with AOO42X we build our
x86 binaries with Cygwin64.
But we should *really* try to get AOO 4.2.0 out. Not only for this
reason. ;-)

Hi Matthias
If I understand correctly this will still allow to build x86 binaries for the Windows OS, right?
It would only be a problem if our builds had to be compiled in a x86 OS?
