Adding "from SourceForge" to download page
Last weekend, we had two separate discussions on the users list where
users implied the OpenOffice site had been hacked or something since the
download started from the sourceforge.net domain.
Of course we know this is normal, but indeed many end-users don't know
what SourceForge is and tend to be careful.
Shall we modify
http://www.openoffice.org/download/
changing
into
"Click here to download from SourceForge for:" ?
Or will this result in even more confusion? Probably it is good that
users know in advance that their download request will be redirected.
Regards,
Andrea.

ahm, yes, thats what I was asking for initially - but when re-reading
the thread I see I was not exact enough. :-(
"Powered by ..." or "Trusted download by ..." or similar. That would be
good.

I just wonder if the logo itself would help people to understand... we
might probably still need to say something like "Downloads powered by".

Thanks, nearly. I had to cut off some empty space in the graphic file to
get it better positioned. You can see this easily when comparing your
graphic with the one on the webpage. I hope this is OK. ;-)
For the moment I've integrated it on the test webpage for the drop-down
boxes:
http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/test/index_droplist.html
Do you have any wishes for changes? If not, I would integrate it
permanently.

Is such logo available at Sourceforge? Then I would add it to the

It's not possible/suitable to have more than 1 link in the green box.
That's the reason why we have a little one below the big one.
BTW:
I'm working on a new solution for the "Need another version?" problem. ;-)

That means only when someone is downloading the software he can see the
links? Doesn't make sense to me.
Better would be to re-think which links can be moved to another place
where they make more sense or to deleted some completely.

+1 for Rob's idea to minimize links from the download page;
Especially the links on the right column.
We can make some HTML sketches for this, and here's an idea (I hope you'll
see the formatting) to open download in a new tab, and move all links to
appear below the download link. E.g.,
*Download **Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1 *for Linux 64-bit (RPM) and Deutsch
from Sourceforge.net, ~175 MB | Last updated: 2013-Oct-01
Need *another version*?
*While you download... *(shown only after a click?)

how to participate/help OpenOffice,
how to stay updated,
...

as there is not much space I've changed the wording into this:
(text)
Download Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1
Click here to download (hosted by Sourceforge.net) for:
Linux 64-bit (RPM) and Deutsch | ~175 MByte | Released: 2013-Oct-01

OK, so the minimal change would be to change the text into
Click here to download (from sourceforge.net) for:
This would have some informative value, since for example people who
expect to download via right-click may understand that they need an
extra click to do so. No need to link the "sourceforge.net" text to
sourceforge.net, it's merely informative.
I didn't change
http://www.openoffice.org/download/
since I'm not really sure that I'll do it right. But the CMS is back, so
whoever is more familiar with particular page can make and publish the
change any time.

Then the alternative is for the download link script instead of just
jumping to sourceforge, display a new page reading ¨You´re being redirected
to Sourceforge.net download servers... ¨ wait a few seconds then proceed
with the redirect.

If we had a simple, clean page, I think users would be less confused.
The more we load up the page with text and links, trying to be
helpful, the more users will be overwhelmed and doubt themselves. I
think we're far past the over-saturation point on the download page
already. I count 67 links on the page already. Mozilla manages to
help users download Firefox with only three links in addition to the
download itself: "Systems & Languages", "What's New" and "Privacy".

Yes, I understand that, but I'm fearing the Joe Averages won't get the
meaning of "served by" or read it and continue reading without stopping to
think what it implies, and will freak out at the redirect nevertheless...

I like this approach. But I'd rephrase it to
"Please note: Apache OpenOffice downloads are hosted at Sourceforge.Net, so
if your browser redirects there, it is normal.
[What is SourceForge?]"
It would be ideal if you can make a pop-up blurb/baloon and when you hover
the mouse over "what is sourceforge" explaining what it is.

All of our client downloads including product binaries, extensions, and
templates are served from SourceForge. I would suggest a statement at
the top of the complete Download column that says something like --
"Trusted downloads served by SourceForge" if you think that would help.
