[VOTE] apache-empire-db-2.0.3-incubating and apache-empire-struts2-ext-1.0.3-incubating release
Hi everyone,
in order to make the namespace renaming available for everyone we should try to get a new release out as soon as possible. I suggest the new release to have version number 2.0.3. (for empire-db core) and 1.0.3. for empire-struts2-extentions.
I hereby call for a vote on this according to the incubator release rules on http://incubator.apache.org/incubation/Incubation_Policy.html#Releases <http://incubator.apache.org/incubation/Incubation_Policy.html#Releases>
This is the first release under the patronage of the ASF Incubator.
We're voting on the distributions available here:

Finally, you run rat on an extracted copy of the distribution, this
ensures the fidelity of the release artifacts.

I was not thinking of you when I mentioned running the RAT report.
Instead I was hoping for some other volonteers.
But of course we need anther release candidate first.
Thanks for all the information about RAT, that will be very helpful.

Typically the release manager would run the rat report, and scan it
for any obvious errors. The rat report is delivered next to the
release artifacts so that anyone checking the release can also read
the report without having to run rat themselves.

Readme, tutorial and ant build scripts have been updated for Apache incubator release
Posted by Rainer Döbele <do...@esteam.de>.
Hi everyone,
I have spent some time today to update the tutorial.pdf and the ant build files for both Empire-db and Empire-Struts2-Extentions.
- Tutorial.pdf is now in Empire-db root direcotory and contains the Apache Copyright notice.
- The Readme contains a reference to the tutorial.pdf.
- An ant build script (build.xml) is provided with the releases in order to build the empire-db.jar and empire-struts2-ext.jar.
>From my perspective we could now make a another attempt to get the release out.
Would someone like to do the RAT report thing?
Jörg would you be so kind to assemple the distributables and make them available for voting.
Thanks.

AW: [VOTE] apache-empire-db-2.0.3-incubating and apache-empire-struts2-ext-1.0.3-incubating release
Posted by Rainer Döbele <do...@esteam.de>.
I think we all agree that "ESTEAM Software" has to go from everywhere in the release.
This has clearly been a simple mistake.
We didn't know about the RAT report (Jörg did you?) but we have acknoleged this and we will consider this in the future.
However Henning I was surprised by your comment that it is "pretty common to release Apache projects as a source archive only without binaries"
In fact, as a long time Apache user I have never seen a release distribution without binaries.
Take Tomcat, Xalan, Struts or Wicket for example, they all contain the binaries.
Or did I misunderstand you on this one?
If no one disagrees I would defer the maven repository for the next release.
But surely we should include the ant build files that we already have with this release.
(We use ant-scripts to build the binaries not the IDE)
Jörg can you find the time to perform all these changes and make a new release candiate?

Posted by Henning Schmiedehausen <he...@apache.org>.
I strongly urge you to keep the 72 hour period even if you have three or
four votes already. This is a worldwide community and it is midnight
somewhere on that planet all the time. If you call for a vote on a
Thursday, you will want to let it run till Monday. Shortcutting votes is
a sure way to get questions or concern about the community state.
On the subject: I pretty much concur with what Martijn wrote. I also
like to add:
- MANIFEST.MF still shows "ESTEAM Software", that should be Apache
- Most java files show "ESTEAM Software" in the author tags. I'd
encourage you to replace these with "Apache Empire-db Authors" or
something like this over the course of incubation.
Getting a RAT report before a release is IMHO necessary. We can let this
slip for the first release, but in the future, I will simply vote a
release down unless it has a RAT report.
It is pretty common to release Apache projects as a source archive only
without binaries, with all the files needed to rebuild and it is
preferred to be able to rebuild the binary with ant/maven or another
command line tool instead of an IDE.
A binary release is fine and also encouraged, but the primary
distribution that Apache does is source code and a way for users to
rebuild it on their system.
You probably also want to release to the incubator Maven repository, too
(easy if you build with maven, a bit more difficult but not much if you
use ant) to get a wider audience for the release.
So my vote is -0; I'd let this one pass but I am pretty sure that the
IPMC will have issues with it. It is probably easier to fix these first.
Best regards
Henning

Re: More votes required for Empire-db release
Posted by Rainer Döbele <do...@esteam.de>.
Hi Martijn,
In fact there has not really been much offline communication.
We have had a discussion on the namespace change on the empire-db-private mailing list at the beginning of August. Jörg release a good basis that we can have a discussion on. After all it's just a suggestion.
Since we are not fully familiar with what is necessary for a release we didn't know about the RAT report. But we are willing to learn. Licensing issues should be resolved as far as I know.
I think it is crucial, that we can supply users with a version that contains the current project state including correct package names which will then the basis for all our further efforts for both development and growing the community.
Otherwise we'd have to tell our users that all their source code will need to be changed again later on which I reckon will put many of them off. And we probably cannot expect first time users to build the jars from the SVN repository.
Does anyone disagree?

No, but you'll get comments from the other reviewers in the Incubator

It is not a must, but it will solve the problem of the Eclipse files,
which can be easily generated from the pom.

Posted by Jörg Reiher <re...@esteam.de>.
Hello,
thanks for your input, Martijn.
As you pointed out there's some work left regarding licensing, readme and build stuff.
I have some questions:
- Are Eclipse project files forbidden? We put them in for convenience reasons.
- Is the maven distributable a must for the initial incubating release or could this be a new feature for the next rel.?
The reason we want this release out as soon as possible is that the namespace from the last (non Apache) release to the new one has changed.
So everyone who would download the last non-Apache-incubator-release would be forced to change his source code after upgrading to the first Apache Incubator release which we find quite painful for the user/developer.
Any inputs from anyone would be appreciated,
Ciao Jörg :-)

The licenses, notice and such should go into the META-INF directory in
the jar file, not in the root.
The manifest.mf should contain information such as documented here:
http://commons.apache.org/releases/prepare.html#checkjarmanifest

- the struts package contains license files for the dependencies, the
core distribution doesn't (which contains e.g. hsqldb)
- the hsqldb jar file (in the empire-db) does not show a version
number in its name
- the struts package doesn't list the freemarker license
- also need Apache license headers in TLD, Java, jsp, properties
files and css files (also check the examples!)
- struts package also doesn't contain build file, readme, release notes

I've run RAT on the distribution
(apache-empire-db-2.0.3-incubating.zip) and noticed the following
things:
- package.html files don't have Apache license header
- eclipse project files are in the distribution
- no build files -> how do I build from source?
- no maven distributable? -> hurts adoption
- no readme/release notes

Hmm
There are a couple of things that worry me:
- no discussion whatsoever on dev@ about the forthcoming release
- no RAT report
- are all licensing issues resolved?
- no discussions, period?
It feels like there is a lot of off-line communication happening,
which is not good.
- growing the community sounds like me to be the number one thing to
concentrate on, not getting a release out of the door asap

More votes required for Empire-db release
Posted by Rainer Döbele <do...@esteam.de>.
Hi folks,
we (i.e. Jörg and I) are still waiting for more votes on our first Empire-db incubator release.
We need one more vote before we can contiune on the the Incubator PMC who has to approve the release too.
There have not been real code changes but the namespace has changed from de.esteam... to org.apache... which is important for anyone who want's to use Empire-db (as you know). Furthermore all legal and formal aspects of the incubator release rules should be fullfilled (thanks to Jörg's meticulous work).
As a reminder for your convenience the files can be found here:

I have downloaded and checked everything: Looks good to me.
Hence my vote is +1
I know it was a lot of work understanding an obeying all the incubator release rules. Thanks Jörg for your excellent job.
