[Bug 123952] New: Open Office won't open documents and freezes computer

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=123952

            Bug ID: 123952
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Open Office won't open documents and freezes computer
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.0.0
          Hardware: Mac
                OS: Mac OSX, 10.9
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: critical
          Priority: P3
         Component: open-import
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: triciagregory1@gmail.com
                CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org

I can no longer access my documents. Open Office freezes computer and won't me
access anything else until I reboot it. I'm not sure what version of Open
Office I have, but my computer is new - bought in August and my grandson added
open office which I have used without problems since. I did get an email from
a friend that was in Open Office which gave me some trouble and I think the
trouble started at that time.

Continuation of Comment 1, number 4. After receiving the corruption window,
and a second window stating the file would not open, OpenOffice opened anyway,
and file was all good, as compared to original .docx file.

--- Comment #1 from Karen McDeavitt <km...@progressive.com> ---
I tried to replicate this failure with no luck.
I am running on a Macbook Pro, with Mac OSX version 10.9.1 with Apache
OpenOffice version 4.0.1.

Steps I ran attempting to replicate:
1. I sent myself an email with two document attachments. Both were written in
OpenOffice with a file extension of .odt. However, one was attached checking
off the ability to open using a Window based application. I opened both of
these files successfully using OpenOffice.

2. I sent myself the same email to my work address, then emailed it back from
that email account. I also successfully opened the documents from that email
as well.

3. I sent myself an email from my work email account, with a Microsoft Word
document with a file extension of .docx. When I attempted to open the .docx
file using OpenOffice, by using the right-click menu options, Microsoft Word
opened anyway, (trumped OpenOffice?). Maybe this is where the other user's
failure lies? Was she/he trying to open a Microsoft Word document using
OpenOffice application?

4. Next, I saved the .docx file in my Documents folder, with an extension of
.odt, to force OpenOffice to open it. When I attempted to open it, I received
a corruption error pop-up window.

I am speaking with Karen McDeavitt about her comments.

I am using Mac OS 10.8.5 and OpenOffice 4.0.1

I am attaching three screenshots that she and I encountered when working with
this bug.

1-- Corruption window Karen mentioned in Step 4 of Comment 1
2-- Message saying file can not be repaired
3 --General error
