As you suggested, this is not a bug because the method you're referring to is a 
proprietary method in Crimson and is not part of the W3C DOM. I added our own 
proprietary way of doing this, setIdAttributeNode, you can use if you'd like.
I also started a discussion on this within the W3C DOM WG to seek a standard 
way of doing this. We'll see what comes out of it.
