I agree completely; it's a true PITA.  But there's nothing that I can
do about it except cope at this point.  See the comments to libc-alpha
below.  In any case, is the patch acceptable?  I agree it should not be
necessary, but to change it on our (debian's) glibc would only cause
even worse sideways compatibility screwups.
