Open Sans (300) Light default on website
Hello,
I'd like to request a change to the default font used on the Hop website?
There is a loss of contrast that falls slightly outside the guidelines of
WCAG 2.0 concerning Contrast
<https://www.w3.org/TR/UNDERSTANDING-WCAG20/visual-audio-contrast7.html>.
The problem:
The Open Sans Light with a weight of 300 falls just outside the WCAG
guidelines for text contrasting.
The solution:
Likely it would be to specify that Open Sans Regular (which is weight 400)
seems to fix the problem.
Caveats and Apache policy?:
Some browsers do not allow overriding website forced fonts (like Edge
currently), and so those with accessibility problems with thin low contrast
fonts will have difficulty unless they choose a different browser and
override the website font rules. Explicit font enforcement is typically
frowned upon (I'd imagine Apache themselves has policies against this), and
instead websites should set a font preference, but not force a font, to be
a good web accessibility citizen.

Hi Thad,
Thank you for bringing this up we highly appreciate the feedback.
Except for some general guidelines on content and links that must be included in the website there are no mandatory guidelines [1] [2]. It seems a page has been added that we have not included yet but that is another problem.
I have created a ticket [3] to follow up on the progress to make accessibility better. Once this is done we will circle back to you so you can confirm.
Also ran a check with an online accessibility service and it seems we have some other problems (missing alt-text on some locations).
Cheers,
Hans

BTW, I did perform in Firefox the Accessibility test for contrast and it
did also produce multiple issues, where an issue especially in the Navbar
areas where it also stated the contrast falls below guidelines. This is
due to the very light grey color choice. But the primary concern is the
body Article text font enforcement which should not be constrained to allow
users browser preferences to override with their font choice and sizing to
address their own unique accessibility concerns.
I had retina surgery, so yeah, it affects me directly a little :-)
Thanks for listening!
