[jira] Created: (HARMONY-6336) ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException thrown without index information; generally AIOBE is thrown without specifiying the index.

ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException thrown without index information; generally AIOBE is thrown without specifiying the index.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: HARMONY-6336
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HARMONY-6336
             Project: Harmony
          Issue Type: Bug
    Affects Versions: 5.0M11
            Reporter: Sebb

Following code:

    public static void main(String[] arg) throws Exception {
        int a[] = {1,2,3};
        a[3] = 4;
    }

Generates
java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException
in Harmony but
java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException 3
with Sun Java 1.4

A quick search of the class library shows that ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException is frequently called without providing the index.

This makes debugging index problems very much harder that it ought to be.

Tim Ellison commented on HARMONY-6336:
--------------------------------------

More enhancements committed up to r812158 which should cover a large number of the class library cases.

The example you give above is a JIT issue. The interpreter does invoke the constructor with the int arg and prints
java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 3

whereas the JIT does not. I'll re-assign to the JIT for further consideration.

Egor Pasko commented on HARMONY-6336:
-------------------------------------

both JITs (JET and OPT) do not keep offset information for AIOOB at throwing points. This is bad.

while in JET this seems to be easy to fix, in OPT a little bit of refactoring will be required (throwing a 'system exception' does not have room for additional parameters currently)

I am not sure I can provide complete solution soon :)

      Priority: Minor  (was: Major)
    Issue Type: Improvement  (was: Bug)

I agree that it would be more helpful to include messages when throwing the exceptions.

The case you give is a VM/JIT issue, though I also see lots of places in the class libraries where the exception is being thrown without a useful message.

I'll start to do some tidy up. Expect it to take a few commits to get a reasonable coverage done.
