debugging SMTP appender

I'm using SMTPAppender as described in the book, but have been unable to
actually get any email messages. I suspect that my mailhost (an exchange
server) may be rejecting the email. The system does switch over to the
fallback appender after the first try.

Is there any way to look at the errors that are causing it to switch to
the fallback appender?
