[Bug 5914] New: FORGED_MUA_OUTLOOK hit mail from Outlook Express 6.00.2900. 5512

https://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=5914

           Summary: FORGED_MUA_OUTLOOK hit mail from Outlook Express
                    6.00.2900.5512
           Product: Spamassassin
           Version: 3.2.4
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Windows XP
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: Rules
        AssignedTo: dev@spamassassin.apache.org
        ReportedBy: rjgodoy@fibertel.com.ar

Created an attachment (id=4325)
 --> (https://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/attachment.cgi?id=4325)
Mail headers included in sent mail.

I've just installed SA on my computer and I found that messages from Outlook
Express 6.00.2900.5512 trigger the FORGED_MUA_OUTLOOK rule.

The X-Mailer and X-MIMEOLE headers are:

X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.5512
X-MIMEOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.5512

(complete headers attached)

As a workaround I have lowered the score of this rule, even though I think it
should not trigger when outlook is my actual mail agent.

Regards

This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 5496. Please have a look there
for the fix.

According to bug 5496 comment 10 the fix has been committed on May 19 -- AFTER
3.2.4 has been released back in January. The fix should be in in 3.2.5
(updating to the latest SA version helps) and has been pushed as a rule update
for all 3.2.x versions. This includes your version. Running sa-update helps...

Also, "I am seeing $RULE hit" seriously doesn't help in fixing an issue,
because it lacks any hint whatsoever as to why you see the rule trigger. You'd
need to provide a full sample for that. Otherwise it's impossible to identify
the issue.

Check a thread in the users mailing list with subject "FORGED_MUA_OUTLOOK is a
nuisance".

The issue is similar to bug #5496.

Your sample lacks several headers, i.e. the message-id and received headers.
Don't use a sample from your outbox, send a message and then use a sample from
your inbox.

Version 2900.5512 is created on systems running Windows XP SP3. One distinct
change with earlier versions is the message id, which is like the one created
on Windows 2003: 32 hexadecimal upper case chars.

it's not just similar, it's a dupe. this issue is fixed in trunk:

Sorry for the confusion. I attached both, inbox and outbox, in order to verify
that the original headers were not modified.

See the 2nd attachment "Mail headers included in the received mail" (they are
the actual headers from my inbox).

>Version 2900.5512 is created on systems running Windows XP SP3.

Message-id: <83...@Javier2>

With 2900.3028 it used to be something like
 <00...@Javier>

Hope that helps.

Created an attachment (id=4326)
 --> (https://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/attachment.cgi?id=4326)
Mail headers included in the received mail.

Note the X-Mailer and X-MIMEOLE appear in different order.
