I can't reproduce this problem with the following setup:
RedHat 8.0
Apache 2.0.40 (installed by rpm)
j2sdk1.4.2_02
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --enable-jni --with-java-
home=${JAVA_HOME} --with-java-platform=2
Builds find.
