Time to move the CI builds to a "private" VM?

Hi,

Given the apparently total lack of support from INFRA and builds@a.o for a
git based CI process on a Windows slave, isn't it time to start thinking
about providing our own VM and running the Jenkins jobs off that?

I would gladly donate my Azure VM for this purpose, but as Mustella runs on
it - which I don't think we want to lose - we need someone else's VM for
this purpose... Om, what is the status of your VM?

Using the free credits that come with an Apache MSDN subscription, you can
run an Azure VM as a 'large' instance for about half a month, and the if
you switch it to a 'medium' instance - reboot required - you can run it for
the remainder of the month without incurring extra (real) cost. This is how
I've been managing the Mustella VM.

The reboot is not particularly a problem, as the Flash Player and Java (on
which Jenkins runs) do tend to clog up the machine, it seems, requiring a
reboot just about every week.

The cost is incurred only when the jobs are run (i.e. for CPU usage). If
we have enough committers bring their VMs online, we can have a well
distributed build VMs which we can ensure to run free of cost.

My VM is very close to being ready. There are a few Mustella tests that
are broken. If Alex can take a look at fixing them, then we will have a
clone-able VM that can be brought up on demand.

For example, Alex need not take time to set up his own VM. We can have a

AW: Time to move the CI builds to a "private" VM?

Posted by Christofer Dutz <ch...@c-ware.de>.
Hi Erik,

had similar trouble with the Flexmojos CI server. Perhaps the option I chose for FM could apply to the Flex project too.
In my case I tried several approaches with Amazon EC2 Windows Nodes as well as Microsoft Azure (Later I liked a lot more), but cancelled both because of the costs. My current solution was to setup a central CI server and setup build Agents on normal Windows machines. So now if I work on FM and chek-in something one of my idling Windows PCs starts building. Works nicely :-)

I have no idea, but we've been trying to get someone - anyone - from builds@a.o to help us out, but there has hardly been any response from them, and even less action. I think having CI is very important for the project and since Apache seems unable/unwilling to support us with the proper infrastructure, and is turning down (ignoring) any offers to help out, I think it's time we "roll our own."

We got legal protection, JIRA, servers, mailing lists, a process for making decision, and more.

Infra is a pain point, especially around Jenkins. I signed up for a VM but never really got it together. If someone has the time to set it up, let me know.

I wasn't part on the project when it started and incubated at the ASF.
What did we get from being an ASF project, apart from the Apache brand "fame" and "durability" (which I must say, is an important thing) ?

Apparently they do. There is this guy Hervé Boutemy, from another project, who is a bit more patient than I am, he is currently again offering to help out INFRA with the proper maintenance of the VMs. He has made the same offer repeatedly over the last few months, initially together with me, but there has never been any response from the people at builds@a.o

Re: Time to move the CI builds to a "private" VM?

Apparently they do. There is this guy Hervé Boutemy, from another project,
who is a bit more patient than I am, he is currently again offering to help
out INFRA with the proper maintenance of the VMs. He has made the same
offer repeatedly over the last few months, initially together with me, but
there has never been any response from the people at builds@a.o

I agree, but this is shocking.

Do other Apache projects have the same concerns?

I have no idea, but we've been trying to get someone - anyone - from builds@a.o to help us out, but there has hardly been any response from them, and even less action. I think having CI is very important for the project and since Apache seems unable/unwilling to support us with the proper infrastructure, and is turning down (ignoring) any offers to help out, I think it's time we "roll our own."

Hi,

Given the apparently total lack of support from INFRA and builds@a.o for a git based CI process on a Windows slave, isn't it time to start thinking about providing our own VM and running the Jenkins jobs off that?

I would gladly donate my Azure VM for this purpose, but as Mustella runs on it - which I don't think we want to lose - we need someone else's VM for this purpose... Om, what is the status of your VM?
