set default type to application/octet-stream

If there are no objections, I'm going to change the distributed defaultType
config in 2.x and 1.3 to application/octet-stream.

It seems also a reasonable default to me.

In fact, I'd like to change the hardcoded default in 2.1 as well. Objections?
