I have managed to get rid of the NPE but this is a bee's nest here. I haven't
managed to produce a proper JPEG-encoded TIFF with either the internal codec or
ImageIO from Java 1.4. I have to give up for the moment. You're welcome to
investigate further and reopen another Bugzilla issue if you have a patch that
improves the situation.

BTW, I suggest you lay your focus on ImageIOTIFFImageWriter instead of this
internal codec which is also based on code from Sun.

We've just started putting Sanselan into the Apache Incubator. This could also
be an alternative for you if you want a JPEG-capable TIFF encoder. I haven't
looked into the code in depth but eventually we will also have an ImageWriter
implementation for Sanselan, I can imagine.
