Documentation
I was just browsing through
http://www.download.openoffice.org/documentation/index.html looking for
documentation on Base. I found user guides for probably all of the
different OO modules EXCEPT Base. Am I looking in the wrong place, or
is there really no User Guide for Base?

You can get chapter 8, plus others, from the complete "Getting Started
With Open Office Manual" which deals with Base, here:

A lot of documentation is done by ODFAuthors. They currently work for
LibreOffice mostly, but the difference to Apache OpenOffice is not
large. So you should look there too. For example there is a German
tutorial, which has been translated.

There are also some "commercial" books provided on Base:
http://www.amazon.com/Database-Programming-OpenOffice-org-Base-Basic/dp/0557007585
And also lots of resources and research on the Forum, you can see,
templates, models, and Query structures to get really sophisticate
pretty quickly on the implementation of Base.
http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewforum.php?f=13
It has Documentation on HSQL, Form design, and database best
practices, like data normalization.
