[Issue 125938] New: Excel file savd as OTP on new laptop. Every time
it's used it will crash. Also affects doc files.
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125938
Issue ID: 125938
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Excel file savd as OTP on new laptop. Every time it's
used it will crash. Also affects doc files.
Product: Calc
Version: 4.1.1
Hardware: Other
OS: Windows 8
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P3
Component: help
Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
Reporter: faldarconsult@hotmail.co.uk
Having bought a new Win8.1 Lenovo laptop I opted to use Open Office rather than
MS Office. Using as MS files found OO crashed regularly. Saved them in OO
format but still on an a daily basis files crash. I regularly work on a
spreadsheet, which can crash up to ten times a day.
Can't be certain that it's not a hardware issue, but since evrything else works
(including CAD programme) getting distnct impression Open Office is the culprit
and am getting less impressed with it as each day passes. I find the only way I
can work is to save every few additions/amendments - hardly the way to work
economically.
Would appreciate any guidance on resolving the issue before I bite the bullet
and go back to MS.
Can provide copy of main file used, but is 2.3mB.

The symptoms that you report are not typical.
Most users have no problems with using OpenOffice.
Are you sure what you did install AOO with admin rights?
If you don't know what I mean, please ask directly to the support forum:
https://forum.openoffice.org
So remember that Calc is not a clone of MS-Excel. So, we recommend always to
work in the AOO native format.

No, you don't understand what I mean.
You must _install_ AOO with administrator privileges.
So, I repeat: see the forum support for this kind of help.

Thanks for initial comment. I downloaded Open Office from their web site, if
there was a need to 'tick a box' for admin then that wasn't made clear and
isn't exactly forward thinking to entice "normal" users!
I fully appreciate OO isn't a clone of MS, But I thought OO was meant to be
able to open and work with MS files. Having had the issue to begin with I saved
as OO spreadsheet and it is this file which now crashes on a daily basis.
So, to reiterate problem - open an MS file, have an issue with programme
freezing. Eventually decide to save as an OO file and work entirely in that
format. Programme freezes/crashes on a daily basis (more than once a day in
fact)I've also had "bad allocation" warning when programme dies.
