How to detect "IMPLIED" attributes ?

Does anyone know wether some XML parser interfaces can provide the 
following information: using DTDs (and Schemas), one can specify the 
default value of attributes.

As a result, when parsing, the application is handed out with a 
full-featured attribute having no ways, it seems, to know wether the 
attribute was actually present or not. Whereas it looks to be a 
wishable feature for some tools (at least editors).

Any idea ?
