COI affirmation www/officers/coi.cgi
Here's how I'd like to have the COI affirmation tool work. Once the discussion here nears consensus, I'll share the plan with the board. Unless anyone thinks that the tool should have a wider discussion on board@...
The tool is protected by officer login and the credentials are sent to the server so that only officers can see the results.
The tool executes one GET to retrieve:
- the current COI document from foundation/officers/COI/fy2020/template.txt
- the current list of officers who are required to affirm their agreement with the COI foundation/officers/COI/fy2020/signatories.txt
- the current list of officers and their status (whether they have already affirmed)
If the user is required to affirm, and has not done so already, the current COI document modified with the officer's availid and date is presented to the officer in a scroll window along with two buttons: (Cancel) and (Affirm)
If the user is not required to affirm, or has already done so, or (Cancel) is pressed, the list of officers and their signing status is displayed.
If Affirm is pressed:
- the officer's availid and timestamp is sent to the server via POST
- POST processing:
-- the COI document with the officer's availid and date is written to the file called foundation/officers/COI/fy2020/availid.txt
-- the list of officers and their signing status is displayed
Open questions:
- how to manage the list of officers required to affirm? one possibility is to create a file: foundation/officers/COI/fy2020/officers.txt which is created by secretary/chair at the beginning of each fiscal year.
- is officer credentials sufficient for the purpose of this tool, or should the tool be restricted to those officers required to affirm?
Feedback?

Restarting COI affirmation www/officers/coi.cgi discussion
Posted by Craig Russell <ap...@gmail.com>.
Now that I can actually test some stuff, I'd like to circle back to the technical details.
Sam pointed out how the script can calculate "today's" list of required signers. That will become part of the script.
The structure would look like:
COI/ # Should this be more like ConflictOfInterest?
template.txt # this year's template
fy2020
template.txt
clr.txt
rubys.txt
...
fy2021
template.txt
clr.txt
rubys.txt
...
But we need to discuss how to track the affirmations year after year. So, the tool will need to:
Check out the COI directory with a depth of one so the list of fyxxxx is available. Then, the tool needs to work with the latest fyxxxx and get a listing of the signers and get the template for that fy. I'm imagining that the template might change year-over-year. To make things easier, we could archive the template in the fyxxxx directory but keep the current template in the top level COI directory.
So I'll look at adding an entry to documents.rb to allow the tool to access a list of the most recent fyxxxx entries. Something like class COIFiles with a self.getlisting method that returns the names of files in the most recent (biggest by sort order) directory.
Other details to worry about right now?
Thanks,
Craig

Interesting.
1. I thought when I ran rackup it used passenger.
2. I found in my terminal history an accidental rm of the /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.3.0/gems/passenger-5.0.30/buildout/apache2/mod_passenger.so
So, my bad.

This is not one of the things mentioned in SETUPMYMAC.md. I'll reinstall it.

You are prompted for your credentials exactly once, and I see the word
'granted' in the logs below, which is exactly what I would expect to
see happen if your credentials were accepted.
But as you haven't described what happened next, I can't help you.
I will say that I tried to reproduce the problem and I get the following:
Safari Can't Open the Page
Safari can't open the page "whimsy.local/board/agenda" because the
server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs
when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes and then try again.
Looking at /var/log/apache2/error_log, I see:
objc[77093]: +[__NSCFConstantString initialize] may have been in
progress in another thread when fork() was called. We cannot safely
call it or ignore it in the fork() child process. Crashing instead.
Set a breakpoint on objc_initializeAfterForkError to debug.
I recognize that as something that was fixed in
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist (search for
OBJC_DISABLE_INITIALIZE_FORK_SAFETY), and then I remembered that I
hadn't started the service using launchd, but rather had started the
service directly using /usr/sbin/httpd.
So the solution for me was:
sudo killall httpd
sudo apachectl start
Once that was done, I could view the board agenda.

Re: COI affirmation www/officers/coi.cgi
Posted by Craig Russell <ap...@gmail.com>.
Progress but not success. I can successfully load the main whimsy page but cannot get past authentication. I get exactly one chance to enter my apache credentials which I have verified are correct, and when I try to get e.g. whimsy/officers/test.cgi [1]
So two things: apparently my credentials are not being accepted, and there is no retry.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Craig

Congrats!

/etc/apache2/httpd.conf
Search for ServerName. Alternately, create
/private/etc/apache2/other/servername.conf, put that one line in it
(adjusting to match your hostname) and restart httpd.

localhost will return something. Please try the following:

For now, ignore ServerName warning (easily fixed). Ignore OnDemand
warning (I seem to be getting this too). Ignore collate_minutes
warning (not sure what is causing this, but it should be unrelated).
The message below indicates that the port 90 address already is in
use. That would imply to me that *something* would be returned by the
following command:
curl localhost
Also, what happens if you stop httpd, and run
sudo /usr/bin/httpd

Re: COI affirmation www/officers/coi.cgi
Posted by Craig Russell <ap...@gmail.com>.
I ran setupmymac --passenger and it complained that passenger was not installed. So I ran brew install passenger and forced the link and ran setupmymac --passenger again.
Mostly successful, until:
$ tools/collate_minutes.rb
which proceeded to write several hundred lines of "already defined" which I had never seen before. [1]
But it still refuses to answer whimsy.local.
Log file shows:
Jun 16 17:20:22 MacBook-Pro-10 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (org.apache.httpd): Please switch away from OnDemand to KeepAlive.
Is that a real problem?

In other words, it starts a process that runs in the background. That
process will generally write to various log files, as defined in
httpd.conf.
In all cases, it should cause SOMETHING to be written to /var/log/system.log.
If the httpd server is stopped, try running
sudo /usr/sbin/httpd
If there is a syntax error in your configuration file, it will output
a message to stderr.
I have a new MacBook Air. I'm running macOS Catalina. I ran
setupmymac on it. I'm attaching my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf file.
Perhaps that might help.

No change in the error_log. Still reports as the last line:

This is in the main apache2 configuration file:
ErrorLog "/private/var/log/apache2/error_log"
CustomLog "/private/var/log/apache2/access_log" common
This is in the whimsy configuration file inside the <VirtualHost *:80> declaration :
ErrorLog "/var/log/apache2/whimsy_error.log"

CustomLog "/var/log/apache2/whimsy_access.log" combined

The error_log has nothing since May 2020.
I set the log level in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf:
# LogLevel: Control the number of messages logged to the error_log.
# Possible values include: debug, info, notice, warn, error, crit,
# alert, emerg.
#
LogLevel debug
I restarted the server. Log still nothing since May 2020.

What do you mean by "all appears to go well"?
Try running "tail -f /var/log/apache2/error_log" in one window and
then "sudo apachectl restart" in another. What do you see in your
error_log?
If that works, try "curl localhost".

/etc/apache2/httpd.conf should contain a line:

The second should be "/var/log/apache2/whimsy_access.log"

That's useful information. It indicates that whimsy configuration
file wasn't loaded for some reason. Hopefully
/var/log/apache2/error_log provides some insight as to why.

Both are set to /var/log/apache2/whimsy_error.log

The log file was last written to in May 2020.
In /Users/clr/apache/git/whimsy I ran config/setupmymac and got no errors and it then opened whimsy.local in a browser and there is nothing in whimsy_error.log.

What it should do is open your browser to display
http://whimsy.local/. What you should see should look like what you
see when you go to https://whimsy.apache.org/

You should have a file on your machine by the name of
/private/etc/apache2/other/whimsy.conf. In that file you should see:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName whimsy.local
## Vhost docroot
DocumentRoot "/srv/whimsy/www"
This tells Apache httpd to serve requests for http://whimsy.local/
from /srv/whimsy/www.
Later in that file you should see ErrorLog and CustomLog directives.
They tell Apache httpd where to place logs. These logs will contain
useful information concerning access attempts and errors.

Re: COI affirmation www/officers/coi.cgi
Posted by Craig Russell <ap...@gmail.com>.
I've run setupmymac many times and it always ends starting the httpd server and then calling my browser to display localhost which just hangs.
I can restart the server via sudo apachectl restart and it all appears to go well.
What I cannot figure out is what the httpd server is servicing and how to talk to it.
Maybe I'm reading the wrong part of SETUPMYMAC.md? Where does it say which url and which port and how to run a .cgi? Do I have to be in a specific directory when I run the scripts?
Thanks,
Craig

Either of the following will set you up to be able to run cgi scripts locally:
https://github.com/apache/whimsy/blob/master/SETUPMYMAC.md
https://github.com/apache/whimsy/blob/master/MACOSX.md
> So is the best approach here to simply create the coi.cgi in www/officers/ and test using the live instance? If so, do I have to wait for Godot each time I commit code until something catches up?
Best approach is to invest the time to get things working locally.
Second best approach is running the CGI scripts from the command line. Example:
ruby www/members/proxy.cgi proxy="Sam%20Ruby"
Third best approach is to test using the live instance. Things are
set up to auto-deploy. Best case for CGI scripts is that this happens
in seconds. Taking a minute or three, however, is not uncommon.
Worst case, installation happens the next time puppet runs, which, if
I remember correctly, is every half hour.

Thanks for that. Now, to test this thing.
I didn't find any way to do local testing of a cgi script in the officers' or members' area of whimsy/www. (I'm currently using rackup to test the roster-emeritus code).
So is the best approach here to simply create the coi.cgi in www/officers/ and test using the live instance? If so, do I have to wait for Godot each time I commit code until something catches up?
Thanks,
