I'm guessing that you have one HTTPS VH and one plain HTTP VH. If so,
you need to create a second name-based HTTP VH and have it redirect to
the HTTPS site. E.g.

# Switch on NBVHs
NameVirtualHost 192.168.1.1

# Default server
<VirtualHost 192.168.1.1:80>
  ServerName www.summerseas.com
  ... rest of VH
</VirtualHost>

# 2nd HTTP VH to trap webmail
<VirtualHost 192.168.1.1:80>
  ServerName webmail.summerseas.com
  Redirect / https://webmail.summerseas.com 
</VirtualHost>

# HTTPS VH
<VirtualHost 192.168.1.1:443>
  ServerName webmail.summerseas.com
  ... rest of HTTPS VH
</VirtualHost>

HTTP and HTTPS are different protocols and use different ports. I think
your misunderstanding was to think that apache would know that
http://server and https://server were related.
