[GitHub] [incubator-iceberg] maqroll opened a new pull request #1060: AppenderMetrics

maqroll opened a new pull request #1060:
URL: https://github.com/apache/incubator-iceberg/pull/1060

Draft just to share ideas and get feedback on file aggregation metrics (which can be used to get metrics while writing avro files, #837).

   Questions:
   - I understand (?) That some metric values (min / max) are linked to the serialization format. What format should be used in a generic appender?
   - A generic appender like this, which module should be placed in?

I built TestAppenderMetrics just as a usage example.

   Comments welcome.

Review comment:
Most of the time, we throw UnsupportedOperationException in this case with a helpful error message that identifies the type ID that wasn't supported.

Review comment:
What about adding an abstract `count` method that children implement to return the record count? It would only be called on the top-level record collector.

Review comment:
Instead of merging lots of maps, what about adding a `FieldMetrics` class with id, count, null count, lower bounds, and upper bounds, then returning `Stream<FieldMetrics>` that get converted to the maps by the caller? Then each subclass would be able to return something fairly simple, like `Stream.of(new FieldMetrics(...))` or `collectors.stream().flatMap(MetricsCollector::getMetrics)`.

Review comment:
Yeah, it would be good to reuse the same tests and just add a parameter, like in #199.
