Ldap alias for user-account doesn't work in jndi realm

Authentication to an ldap realm fails if I use a user alias. "normal"
user-accounts work properly. 
I've tried "always" and "never" for "derefAliases" but it doesn't work. 

How do I authenticate successfully with an alias?
