Editting HTMLEntities.res

I have a source file that has entity references such as &uuml; and I
would like this to be transferred as is to the result document.  The
default action with Xalan seems that &#252; is transformed to &uuml;,
but trying for the inverse seems problematic.  I have tried to use an
external entity file myentities.ent with the same results.  Any help on
creating an entity file that would allow the transfer of the entity
reference would be greatly appreciated.
