Thanks, [~jdf]!  Jim and I collaborated on this patch.  He switched everything over to use htrace, I worked on writing the new traces to Accumulo, and we teamed up on debugging.  This patch would also fix ACCUMULO-1197, because tracing is automatically passed through to HDFS with the switch to htrace.  HDFS tracing has begun to be added to Hadoop trunk, so if you were using Accumulo on Hadoop 3.0.0-SNAPSHOT, you would see HDFS spans as shown in Jim's snapshots.
