[jira] [Commented] (LEGAL-136) LICENSE/NOTICE in SVN tags

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-136?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=14537441#comment-14537441 ]

Henri Yandell commented on LEGAL-136:
-------------------------------------

If you are directing users to the tags/ (i.e. they are for more than the PMC's value) then said user, when checking out out the files under a tags/, should have something that indicates the licensing.

> The UIMA project has a part of its SVN tree called "build" which contains tooling used to build UIMA; it's not directly released as part of the UIMA project. However, for the tooling to work with Maven, we do "releases" of these build components so they can get to Maven Central for use by anyone trying to build UIMA. (They are not announced to users, nor are they put on the Apache "mirror" system for distribution.)
> In SVN, the build directory has the standard 3 subdirectories: trunk, tags, and branches. The trunk has subdirectories for each tool, plus a LICENSE/NOTICE pair immediately under the trunk/. Because we release only specific projects in the trunk from time to time, the tags directory has those projects that are being released, but does not have a LICENSE/NOTICE pair.
> This is similar to how the Maven project is set up. For instance, Maven's "plugins" directory in SVN has the trunk, tags, and branches subdirectories, and the trunk has the LICENSE/NOTICE pair directly as files under trunk/. But no such LICENSE/NOTICE files are found under the tags/ directory.
> Should this be changed, so that the files under the tags/ have somewhere a LICENSE/NOTICE that applies for that part of the SVN tree? (For instance, by copying the LICENSE/NOTICE file under trunk/ to tags/, if the same LICENSE/NOTICE files apply to all projects in that part of the tree)
