   The direct runner has a hard fail if it encounters an External op now (https://github.com/apache/beam/blob/058c56af735e10184d1501cc08cd16af4d21e64a/sdks/go/pkg/beam/runners/direct/direct.go#L336) or at least it should. What version of Beam are you using?
