I have recently put in a change which stores the decoded data as a scalar
because I couldn't see much of a reason to keep it stored as an array.

Changing raw to be a scalar will require an API change, because right now it's
supposed to be an array.  We can change it internally but still return an array
when raw() is called, which requires a split() call, but ...

I'd like to close this ticket, unless anyone else has some comments?
