official logos ???

I'm starting to do some work on the "Distributor FAQ" (up soonish on the
wiki for comments) and have come to a bit of an issue with regard to the
actual display and download areas of our "official" logos. (If this has
been discussed before, please excuse me here.)

On the website, the "official" logo is here:

http://www.openoffice.org/marketing/art/galleries/logos/

However, we are no longer using this, yet I think it's still considered
an "official" logo.

We have a reference to the new "Get It Here"
on our Trademarks page

http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/trademarks.html

which references the "project" directory
http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/images/get-it-here/en.png

So, two questions...

-- should any logos that we currently use on
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+3.x+-+Logo+Explorations

be moved to the project images area as well.

I'm thinking only of the one we currently use on the web server, and
maybe the older one as well.

-- do we want to change

http://www.openoffice.org/marketing/art/galleries/logos/

only the logos that are *in* the project images area.

Thanks.

Current branding is a mix of the refresh set with the orb (Start center, splash screen, taskbar, about, ...) and former icons (MIME, applications).
It's rather strange because there is a gap between the new icons and the old ones (the old set is quite old fashioned IMHO).

I don't remember any vote at all. I've found that old thread dated end of last year: old colored vs new monochrome icons. Rather long so will have a look at it tomorrow. But if there is a message that concludes it, it would be great!

I've checked the following page and its child pages: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Branding+Planning
Only the product logo is clearly mentioned as "voted".

NB: will review the "old colored vs new monochrome icons" topic and either revive it or create a new topic. Target being to make progress on the MIME and application icons (at least for AOO 4).
For the record:
Old icons: http://www.openoffice.org/ui/VisualDesign/OOo30MimeType.html
Refresh icons: http://www.openoffice.org/ui/VisualDesign/OOo3_refresh.html

Looks fine to me. You have the correct name and the TM. The
Community Forums are part of the overall OpenOffice website, so you
don't need any special permission to use the logo on the website.

We had a logo contest and vote for AOO 3.4.0. I think AOO 3.4.1 will
use the same logo.

In any case, a change of the logo is like any other change to the
product. For non-controversial changes, JFDI. If you are not sure if
it is controversial, then seek Lazy Consensus with a proposal and
72-hours. If there are competing proposals, then we can discuss, and
if necessary, as a last resort we can vote.

Hagar --

I think such a discussion would be a great idea. Please feel free to start
one.

In this thread though, I badly got confused our trademarks -- "Apache
OpenOffice", "OpenOffice.org" and things that contain our trademarks --
some of the logos, for example. I apologize if I totally confused everyone
over this. The logos themselves are NOT trademarks but contain the
trademarks.

Anyway, yes, please start on a thread on whatever imaging you think we need
consensus on. This would help a lot!

+1.

I don't see any clear direction for the logos.
I've made some tweaking for the download logo. I think we need to be clear and simple, avoid too much colors and background that could not fit with the rest of the page. See: http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=102&t=54452#p238128
Is it ok or not?

Can we still use the refresh set of icons (above)?
Do we intend to have a discussion + proposals/contest + vote for the visual identity of the product?

Hi Kay,

Probably the best images available of the orb are at:

http://www.openoffice.org/ui/VisualDesign/OOo3_refresh.html

This was Stella's work for the last brand refresh which is where the orb came
into use.

Cheers

Ariel, thanks...

I won't go into what happened when I tried to deal with the svg file a
day or so ago. I am NOT a graphics person...I'll work on this some more.
I can always learn new things as long as there's no risk of bone

You have two ways to test if this is a true svg graphic or a raster
graphic:

- open the file with an SVG editor or viewer, zoom the picture: if this
svg has only a raster embedded, then when zooming you get to see the
  image individual pixels as squares
- open the file with a plain text editor: in a real svg graphic you see
only mark up code; if a raster image is embedded, you see the image
content, encoded. This is the case with the image of the link from
  above:

<image x="1100" y="7000" width="25401" height="8461" xlink:href="data:image/png;base64,

and you see all the image content encoded. So it is a raster image
embedded on an svg file, not a real svg graphic. You can zoom the real
vector graphics without quality loss, you don't get "pixel squares"; of
course, wikipedia explains it better than me ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raster_graphics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_graphics

With the original SVG graphic it's possible to generate raster graphics
of any size without quality loss.

What I used was from this page:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/pages/viewpageattachments.action?pageId=27834483

this svg...

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/download/attachments/27834483/AOO+Logo+SVG.svg

Is this not right?

After you sent this I checked that I hadn't actually posted a smaller
rendition (via gimp inadvertently and saved it)...

oh boy! you are definitely correct on this one! :(

I should have put this one instead...

OK, I'll change this...

The one you have is nice...the designer must have received permission to

ooo-site/content/images/AOO_logos/svg/OOo_Website_v2_copy.svg is not
really an svg file, but an svg with a raster image embedded.

Can you upload the original SVG file for this, and for the orb as seen

This orb is not ooo-site/content/images/AOO_logos/svg/orb.svg

Thanks Rob...I would have done something like this today...didn't get to
it yesterday...

yeah-- I was definitely thinking of extending the /images/AOO_logos to
house JUST the logos...

after that aggregating the other "art" seems like a worthwhile idea...

Hi Kevin--

See my post from yesterday --
[DISCUSS] Distribution FAQ...

My intention was to mainly deal with trademark issues, but a guide on
actual use/placement would be super...

KG01 - in addition to aggregating the logos assets in a single, trusted
source, we should also create a branding usage guide, with guidance on how
to use, and not to use the logo elements.

I will capture an action to create a page in the wiki to start to author
such content for future use.

I haven't looked at these in detail, but from the names, the files in
content/marketing/art/galleries sound like they might be relevant.

If those logos are the ones we want, maybe extend the existing
directory structure to include the AOO logos, as well as CD artwork,
etc.?

OK...I will try to "find" svg versions of these -- I did see what Drew
posted on the wiki; still looking for the OOo 3.3 one. I don't think
these should permanently live on the wiki. My feeling is that need to be
in a "safer" environment.

It seems many of these were under the "marketing" area in the past.
Although I don't find sources, svg, there.

Any suggestions as to where do we want these to live?

That is a 300x150px PNG file. So I believe that is only a copy of
our official logo. The original logo should be a vector image, like
SVG.

So that logo is a small PNG as well, not the original source. Drew
posted the source file on the wiki.

OK. So as you point out, what we have today is a mess ;-)

I'd recommend that we aim for a single location for the image source
files. So, we have a place where we can keep the original source
files for any important logos. This would include our current
"official" logos, our accessory logos like the "Get it here!" logo, as
well as source for the legacy logos. Why bother with legacy logos?
Because they may have graphical elements that we want to reuse in
future logos. If we can't find source for a particular logo, then we
store the highest resolution, least compressed version of the bitmap
image that we can find.

If we have the original source collected in some consistent way then I
think we can be less concerned about the rasterized versions. There
might be several places where these are stored. (And they are not so
much "stored" as "used".) For example, one might be on the website
(ooo-site in Subversion) while another copy might be in a product
directory because it is used in the UI. Another version might be on
the wiki, or on the blog's media library. There may be some
advantages to trying to clean this all up and say here is the single
one place where the raster images are stored, but that sounds like a
lot of work. And in some cases this might not be possible, since the
image may need slight tweaking. For example, one use might need an
alpha transparency channel, while another use needs an explicit white
background.
