[GUMP] forrest depends on nekopull
which is defined in forrest's descriptor but the dependency is not
declared.

OK - I'll try that tomorrow. Thanks for the little nudges in requiring
me to learn more about Gump - seriously!

Aha. On http://lsd.student.utwente.nl/gump/xml-forrest.html, we now have
a useful Gump failure message IIUC.
Thanks for all the shepherding, Stefan. I feel a better Gump citizen
now! :-)

OK - I'm stupid... :-)
I have:
<project name="xml-forrest">
<version fix="0" major="0" minor="5" tag="-dev"/>
<package>org.apache.forrest</package>
<ant/>
<depend project="jakarta-ant"/>
<depend project="xml-xerces"/>
<depend project="xml-xalan2"/>
<depend project="cocoon" inherit="all"/>
<depend project="jakarta-oro"/>
<depend project="nekopull"/>
</project>
and
<project name="nekopull">
<url href="http://www.apache.org/~andyc/neko/doc/pull/index.html"/>
<description>
NekoPull is an XML document parsing API that extends the
Xerces Native Interface (XNI) to provide pull parsing functionality.
</description>
<home nested="src/scratchpad/lib/"/>
<jar name="nekopull.jar"/>
</project>
in my module file. Is that how it should be done?

unfortunately not.
You have declared the project named nekopull inside the same "module"
as the project forrest, but that's all there is to Gump. There is no
implied relation between two projects that are defined in the same
module except that you get them with the same CVS checkout.
All dependencies have to be declared inside the project that depends
on some other project by using the <depend> element.

... it is, I was presuming...?
Or am I doing something completely wrong? I must admit that Nicola's
embellishments to the Gump descriptor are quite obtuse to me, but as a
sibling to the forrest project in module.xml, I have
<project name="nekopull">
<url href="http://www.apache.org/~andyc/neko/doc/pull/index.html"/>
<description>
NekoPull is an XML document parsing API that extends the
Xerces Native Interface (XNI) to provide pull parsing functionality.
</description>
<home nested="src/scratchpad/lib/"/>
<jar name="nekopull.jar"/>
</project>
Is this wrong? How?

Please read the archives of Alexandria dev, you will see them.

Eh?

Read the manual. Look at the alexandria descriptor in CVS history. Read
the legacy Alexandria docs.
And give me an alternative solution if you can, else this is all empty
speach.

Excuse me Nicola, but I would also prefer to see this formalisation of
new descriptor functionalities to be executed _inside_ the Gump project.
I find it hard to understand what is 'Gump' and what is
'Nicola-using-Forrest-as-a-testbed' in module.xml.
Then again, I assume I made perfectly clear in the last few days how
clueless I am with regard to Gump. So excuse me if my perception is wrong.

It has been already discussed on the Gump list from a Gump-Alexandria
POV. You were not on the list at that time AFAIK.
YOu have jumped onto Gump only lately. I have been messing with it in
many ways for many many months now.
> Would you mind asking for one?
Sure. It striked me strange though that while Jeff and I are talking
about using it instead of skinconf, you ask to delete it and ask for a
community decision. Take part in the discussion you are invited.
As for the decision itself, don't worry, it will come.

No, it is *YOU* that think it is. There has never been a community
decision on this.
Would you mind asking for one?

*sigh* when will you understand? This is all part of the project descriptor.

I'm getting fed up of this refrain.

Divide at impera: keep the project info in one place and the dependency
information in another.
Period.
let's stop this 'overdesign', please.

why don't we move the project descriptor back to gump where it belongs?
Cocoon can't do this because it uses it for its own build system but
this is not the case for forrest, thoughts?
