From manual testing:

- empty aliases will not be flagged as invalid, but are harmless as they never get used
- blank (space only) aliases indeed work

Proposal:

- add test coverage for both
- flag empty aliases as invalid (so that it shows in the log, and users become aware about potentially broken entries)
