But I don't understand user would need to suppress the default with an empty decorator. This makes no sense to me at all as an empty decorator means your portlet won't show up at all!!! What am I missing here?

Either the user can make use of the existing decorator.vm and if they can't they define their own within their decoartion. It is as simple as that.

I have commited the the changes ro enable this. What you will notice most is how much smaller the decorations as most of them take advantage of the decorator.vm in the decorations/html directory and the default images decorations/html/images.

Just to clarify some thoughts... if users can deploy their own customized defaults, they will be able to use the defaulting mechanisms to their own ends and leverage this work. Also, the users would then not need to suppress the defaulting, (one could always deploy an empty decorator as the default to remove the J2 defaults).

1. Can I suppress this defaulting, (if say I do not want any defaults for my custom layouts)?

- Defaults are only used if there is no alternative in your custom decoration. There is currently no way to disable them with a switch. You could also just remove the defaults.

2. Can the defaults be deployed?

- They can be copied into the decorations directory live but there is no support for deploying them via a jar. However I don't feel default need to be deployable in this manner.

3. Can there be language specific defaults?

Not at the moment. I can look at this if this is a desired feature.
