tomcat crashes with no trace?

hi;
i have been getting very wierd behavior from tomcat 5.0.30 lately. i have 3 applications deployed on it. the OS is freeBSD.
tomcat just crashes with no trace, log or proper shutdown - its like someone pulled the power plug.
i am desperate and dont know how to attack this issue.
any suggestions would be great.
