svnadmin create dies strangely - WinXP

Hello... i talked about this to a few people on IRC:

Working in WinXP-SP1 on a recently NTFS formatted local partition.

upon doing:
D:\>svnadmin create svntest

i get:
svn: Berkeley DB error while creating 'nodes' table for filesystem
svntest/db:
DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery

which is, of course, unrecoverable.
The fun bit is when i started poking around with this, i found out that
i can create the DB in other partitions (i got five, two on one disk,
three in another, all local) as long as it wasnt the same physical
disk.... O_o;;

Then i tried creating a DB in C, which worked, but when moving to one of
the offending partitions, svnlook would die trying to fetch the date or log.
Then, i created a new DB, moved it there, and moved it back. It still
worked.
Then, i created a new DB, moved it there, did svnlook date on it, then
moved it back. It was dead.

any Ideas? i know i could install linux, i could mount the DB in another
partition, etc.. but thats not what im asking about.
Thanks.

PS: i did try changing permissions and owner to no avail. thats the
reason behind the format.

Not necessarily...depends on how it's configured

Again, not necessarily. It could be a driver problem, for example. Some
filter driver could be interfering with BDB's ability to mmap the
databse files.

If you find a reliable way to reproduce this (other than "use /that/
disk on my machine") then by all means describe it on the dev@ list. A
significant difference between the offending disk and all other volumes
on your system would definitely help.

We try. :-)

yeah... an antivirus would have caused problems in all partitions, if it
was an issue
and i would have noticed a hardware problem when moving things around...
should i mail the dev list?

I can understand wouldn't work on G; we've had problems on FAT before,
but nobody cared enough to fix them. I don't see how that would affect
the D volume, though.

Hm... I tried creating a FAT32 volume on some free space I have on a
(dynamic) logical disk that already contains 4 NTFS volumes. I can't
reproduce your problem, though; I can still create a repository on the
FAT32 and any NTFS volume.

I can only guess that it might be some kind of hardware problem, or
interaction with a virus scanner or similar software. I'm only guessing,
though.

Yup. It doesn't help me much, but it is what I asked for... :-)
Sorry I can't help you more.

First of all, thanks for the help =)

Ok, i'll name them G and D (windows stuff, ya know) where D is the place
i want the repository to be, and G is the other partition where it wont
work, both are in the same disk. No partition (at all!) is compressed or
encrypted. All of these are local disks.

D (NTFS): size: 6.38Gb, 147Mb used
cluster size: 4kb
MFT: 631kb, 85% used

G (FAT32): size: 1.48Gb, 598Mb used
cluster size: 4kb

for reference, the disk i'm using now to hold the repository (where it
works):
C (NTFS): size: 9,99Gb, 8,79Gb used
cluster size: 4Kb
MFT: 107Mb, 96% used

is that what you asked for? i'm not so sure.

It's hard to say without more information.

Can you tell us more about the partitions, especially differences
between the ones that work and the one that doesn't? Things like
filesystem size, allocation size, compression/encryption flags, etc.

I can't keep the repository for too long in its current location
maybe i found a bug? =O

any help appreciated, and let me know if i should post to devs

I can't imagine what would be going wrong. It's almost certainly not the
permissions, or svnadmin couldn't have created anything at all. Weird.

checked the disk for errors (not one found), and I had been working with
it for ages without any trouble (i keep my personal stuff there, and i
just hauled it all out to accomodate the repository, with no errors)

Which filesystem are you using on that partition where BDB doesn't work?
And have you tried to scan he disk for errors?

Line ending inconsistency

Posted by Robin Becker <ro...@reportlab.com>.
I was un-nerved recently when after making some changes and attempting to revert
I was told that there were line ending inconsistencies in the source stream.

The problem seemed to be that the original source contained a single 0x0D
character and that prevented SVN from continuing. Attempts to update also caused
this problem. I believe the original file in the CVS repository had this problem
and it was propagated into the svn repository via cvs2svn.

The fix involved going from svn:eol-style native to binary and back.

Can anyone give a clear description of when this problem is liable to happen
and what is the 'correct' way to fix up a file when this happens?
