+<p>Creating a branch executes the following steps:</p>
+<ul><li>Check that there are no uncommitted changes in the sources</li>
+<li>Change the version in the poms if you want to change it in the branch (you will be prompted for the versions to use)</li>
+<li>Transform the SCM information in the POM to include the final destination of the tag</li>
+<li>Commit the modified POMs</li>
+<li>Tag the code in the SCM as a new branch with a version name (this will be prompted for)</li>
+<li>Bump the version in the POMs if you want to change it to a new value y-SNAPSHOT (these values will also be prompted for)</li>
+<li>Commit the modified POMs</li>
+</ul>
+<p>To execute this step, run:</p>

+<p>By default, the pom in the new branch keeps the same version as the local working copy, and the local pom is incremented to the next revision. If you want to update versions in the new branch and not in the working copy, run:</p>
+<div class="source"><pre>mvn release:branch -DbranchName=my-branch -DupdateBranchVersions=true -DupdateWorkingCopyVersions=false</pre>

+<p><b>Note:</b> It can be useful if you want to create a branch from a tag</p>
+<div class="section"><h3>Specify versions on the command line.</h3>
+<p>You may want to specify the versions to use on the command line. This can be useful for example if you are running the release in non-interactive mode. The branch goal can use the same properties used by the prepare goal for specifying the versions to be used.</p>

+<p>To generate poms with resolved information (e.g. version numbers) to check the values that the release plugin will use, set the property <tt>generateReleasePoms</tt> to <tt>true</tt>. Resolved values will be saved in <tt>release-pom.xml</tt>.</p>

+<p>This relies on <tt>release.properties</tt> being present from a previous release preparation. If this is not the case, you need to give the goal the name of the URL and optional tag to perform the release from. For example:</p>

+<p>If you want to lock the files during release operation set the property <tt>useEditMode</tt> to <tt>true</tt>. The default value of this property is <tt>false</tt>.</p>

+<p>In some environments, it may be necessary to perform a non-interactive release. This means that the release plugin will obtain the required parameters from system properties (set on the command line) or from a properties file (<tt>release.properties</tt>).</p>
+<p>To prevent the release plugin from promting the user for any information, maven should be put into batch mode.</p>

+<div class="section"><h3>Using system properties</h3>
+<p>Using batch mode with no other configuration will cause the release plugin to use default values for the release version, the scm tag, and the next development version. These values can also be set from the command line.</p>
+<p>The scm tag name can be set using the <tt>tag</tt> property. And default values for the release version and new development version can be set using the properties <tt>releaseVersion</tt> and <tt>developmentVersion</tt> respectively.</p>

+<div class="section"><h3>Multi-module releases</h3>
+<p>Because there is the possibility that a release will include multiple release versions and snapshot versions (for a multi-module project), there is a specific format for setting these values. The property name should start with <tt>project.rel</tt> for release versions and <tt>project.dev</tt> for the new development version. These prefixes are followed by the maven groupId and artifactId (separated by a colon). So the result looks something like the following example.</p>

+<p>Performing a release does the following:</p>
+<ul><li>Checkout from an SCM URL with optional tag</li>
+<li>Run the predefined Maven goals to release the project (by default, <tt>deploy site-deploy</tt>)</li>
+</ul>
+<p>To execute this step, run:</p>

+<p>It is possible to force some profiles to get enabled during release (for example to enable time-consummung tasks that are only relevant at release-time) by setting a coma separated list of profiles names in the releaseProfiles parameter. +<p>Preparing a release executes the following steps:</p>
+<ul><li>Check that there are no uncommitted changes in the sources</li>
+<li>Check that there are no SNAPSHOT dependencies</li>
+<li>Change the version in the poms from x-SNAPSHOT to a new version (you will be prompted for the versions to use)</li>
+<li>Transform the SCM information in the POM to include the final destination of the tag</li>
+<li>Run the project tests against the modified POMs to confirm everything is in working order</li>
+<li>Commit the modified POMs</li>
+<li>Tag the code in the SCM with a version name (this will be prompted for)</li>
+<li>Bump the version in the POMs to a new value y-SNAPSHOT (these values will also be prompted for)</li>
+<li>Commit the modified POMs</li>
+</ul>
+<p>To execute this step, run:</p>

+<p><b>Note:</b> If an error occurs, or the process is cancelled, then running this command again will pick up from where the last one left off.</p>
+<p>If you wish to start again, use:</p>

+<p>To rollback a release, the following requirements should be met:</p>
+<ul><li>You haven't ran <b>release:clean</b> on the project so that the backup files and the release descriptor of the previous still exists.<p>When a release is rolled back, the following are executed:</p>
+</li>
+<li>All project POMs are reverted back to their pre-release state locally and also in the SCM if the previous release command was able to successfully make changes in the SCM to the POMs using a backup created during <b>release:prepare</b>.</li>
+<li>The created branch/tag in SCM for the release is removed. <b>not yet implemented</b><p>To execute this step, run:</p>
