Anything new regarding this bug? I'm facing EXACTLY the same problem on 2.0.49, 
which renders it completely unusable for me. Apache 1 worked fine, it used User 
and Group when no UserDir request was made, and used the correct user when a 
UserDir request was made.

Please have a look at this soon, it prevents me from using 2.x :-(
