How to create an excel list for filtering?

Greetings:

If I go into Excel and right click on a column one of my options is to
create a list spanning a certain cell range. This list is used for filtering
and sorting. Is there any way to create a list over a column range
programmatically, using the HSSF classes? I would prefer this to creating
one manually and then using it as a template.
