Help to publish jcs 2.0-beta-1 site

Hi guys

Is there any doc on how to publish a commons site without cms? Basically a
scp like would save me this time.

the staging repo has already been released, see here:

http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/commons/commons-jcs/

It's a beta release, so I guess people are aware that the final release
might not be fully compatible.

I can remember, when I tried to make a beta release for collections 4,
there was strong opposition and we ended up releasing an alpha and *not*
publishing to maven central.

It also looks like that the release process as described in
http://commons.apache.org/releases/release.html was not really followed
for jcs, several items on the list are missing.

Probably better the next time that a more experienced RM provides help.

Thomas

Sure, waiting 1-2 more releases before speaking about need (we need to
release it again to clean up few issues in EE servers)

Re: Help to publish jcs 2.0-beta-1 site

Posted by Romain Manni-Bucau <rm...@gmail.com>.
You miss a very important point: that's a beta.

Several maven plugin forbids not final (either x.y.z.Final or x.y.z).

That said if we break something in user space we can go for a 3.x, that's
really a detail IMO - and if not it just shows we are not able to release
often enough and we should fix it.

Release cycle should be fast IMO, release number should reflect there is a
breaking change or not and that's it, all other stuff is detail if releases
are easy to get.

Last note: jcs maybe doesn't fit commons anymore since it grows

Since transitive dependencies are pulled in by build tools automatically,
this doesn't really matter. If we make something available via maven
central, people will start to use it. This is why we have snapshot
repositories, where we can push things that will change. Commons components
are likely to be depended on by a variety of other projects, so the
likelihood of version clashes is high. I don't see another way to avoid jar
hell than being very restrictive. We have discussed this very often and
nobody has come up with a better solution yet (and I don't think such a
solution exists).

Re: Help to publish jcs 2.0-beta-1 site

Posted by Romain Manni-Bucau <rm...@gmail.com>.
Not a staging, it is on central (
http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/commons/commons-jcs-dist/2.0-beta-1/
)

We spoke about binary compatibility, we don't expect any impacting
breakage. [a bit off topic]That said it is a beta and not even a RC so not
sure this rule should apply here.[/a bit off topic]

Main issue I got was lack of perms and the fact jcs was not setup in cms
staging (not sure why btw)

Is this a staging repo for maven central? If we publish this, any further
beta releases must not break binary compatibility. Are you aware of this?

I've logged into nexus, but I cannot see the staging repository.

Have a look at [1]. You have build the site locally and then add and commit
it to the SVN directory of the site (in your case that would be
https://svn.apache.org/repos/infra/websites/production/commons/content/proper/commons-jcs
)
