Martin,
This is a personal pet hate of mine too. However we are planning to review the whole of the mail infrastructure later this year, where this will become a critical component in any changes we make.
It will get wrapped up then.

> I'm trying to use the SMTP mail service at people.apache.org:465. I can connect to it with openssl s_client, and I can log in successfully (by manually crafting the appropriate SMTP commands). However, when I try to use the Mac OS X Mail.app, it just times out. Have you seen that problem before?
> I've done a packet capture, and it shows the client connecting successfully, but closing the connection right after the receiving the server certificate. It then connects a second time, and that second connection idles for several minutes until it times out. On neither of the connections does the client even attempt to log in, so it's not a password issue.
> I thought that perhaps it's a problem with the self-signed certificate on that server, but I've tried adding that certificate to the OS certificate store, and it made no difference.
> Any ideas you have would be appreciated.
