Mike,
SystemDefaultHttpClient is deprecated in 4.3 in favor of HttpClientBuilder which supports 'http.agent' when configured to use system properties. Could you please take a look at the SVN trunk and let me know if the new APIs resolve the issue to your satisfaction.
