[VOTE]: Release Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 (RC4)

Hi all,

this is a call for vote on releasing the available release candidate
(RC4) as Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0.

Apache OpenOffice 4.1 is a minor update with many bugfixes and at least
2 major improvements. It's the first version where we have the
iAccessibility2 support integrated and available. A very huge step
forward to reach and better support disabled users especially on
Windows. The second improvement is the switch to 64 bit on MacOS. A long
and overdue "must do" shift forward to support newer APIs (replace
deprecated APIs) and platforms on MacOS.
And we can provide again more complete UI translations and have now
support for 38 languages. New languages for this release compared to
4.0.1 are Bulgarian, Danish, Hebrew, Hindi, Norwegian Bokmal and Thai.

Apache OpenOffice 4.1 will be a further key milestone to continue the
success of OpenOffice.

An overview of the integrated release issues can be found under:

http://people.apache.org/~jsc/milestones/4.1.0-rc4/AOO4.1.0_RC4_fixes.html

The RC4 fixed 2 further problems:
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124682
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124701

RC3:
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124617
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124639

RC2:
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124599
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124607
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124509
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124394

The release candidate artifacts (source release, as well as binary
releases for 38 languages) and further information how to verify and
review Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 can be found on the following wiki page:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds

(alternative directly via
http://ci.apache.org/projects/openoffice/milestones/4.1.0-rc4)

*.dmg files are currently not recognized as binaries and have to be
saved manually (save link as ...).

The RC is based on the release branch AOO410, revision 1589052! And a
fresh and clean RAT scan output of this revision can be found under

http://people.apache.org/~jsc/milestones/4.1.0-rc4/AOO4.1.0_RAT_Scan.html

Please vote on releasing this package as Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0

The vote starts now and will be open until:

   Monday, 28 April: 2014-04-28 10:00pm UTC+2.

But we invite all people to vote (non binding) on this RC. We would like
to provide a release that is supported by the majority of our project
members.

[ ] +1 Release this package as Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0
   [ ] 0 Don't care
[ ] -1 Do not release this package because...

of course not, I read it so many times and still haven't noticed this.

It's definitely AOO 4.1.0 and the number of binding votes is 14. I
missed YueShen Fan and Kazunari Hirano as PMC members, sorry for that.

definitely no 4.0.1 patch, the patch mechanism needs some further work
(and testing) to make it 100% usable and reliable. It will definitely
come in the future but I can't say for sure for which version.

One question: will there be a 4.0.1 to 4.1.0 msp patch?

[RESULT][VOTE]: Release Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 (RC4)

Posted by Jürgen Schmidt <jo...@gmail.com>.
The vote period to release the AOO 4.1.0 RC4 (based on release
branch AOO410, revision 1589052) as Apache OpenOffice 4.1 has ended.

The ballot results in 28 votes, 28 +1 votes including 12 binding PMC

3 binding +1 votes are necessary for the release. That means the ballot
closed successful to release the RC as AOO 4.1 Beta.

+1 from me.

I did my standard testing on 3 platforms, build the src release and
think it will be a very solid and good version. I used a snapshot build
(later the Beta, RC's) since weeks for my daily work ...

Thanks, Jurgen, I misunderstood the process, before you & Andrea explained
it to me. As Andrea suggested a few months ago, I prefer to release OO with
Hebrew, AS-IS, rather than drop it. Who knows, the translation oddities may
attract more translators :)

Andrea explained already how it works and even if we have an improved
translation process in the future with an automated integration from
Pootle into trunk, we will have translation deadlines and no automated
integration on release branches.

If the Hebrew community don't want release the RC4 I am fine with this
decision and will drop the Hebrew release. But we won't stop the release
in general for one language.

The changes will be available in the next release ...

Thanks Andrea. It's more clear now. I think we should describe this
process, somewhere, with a link to the issues site, and planning wiki.

+ Opened a Hebrew translation update issue:

When we build a new RC, we don't update languages automatically. Juergen
included a list of issues that were fixed. Translation changes are
imported only if they are blocking. The translation deadline was back in
March, then we allowed Hebrew in considerably later, but it wasn't
updated after that initial import (no languages were).

> Is there a process of notifying builders about a translation update?

There is a translation deadline. We aren't very strict about it, but we
will try to give it more visibility on the l10n lists for the next
release. Note: it is not enough to fix the translation in Pootle. It
needs to be explicitly imported, with a dedicated issue like
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124087

Translations won't be updated before the final 4.1 release. But your
work on Pootle won't be lost. It will simply be integrated in the next
release.

   Andrea.

Jurgen, I've installed RC4 for Mac, and I notice that the Hebrew
translation isn't the latest version on Pootle, as I though it will be.

Is there a process of notifying builders about a translation update?
What version of the translation will be used, for 4.1 release RC5, or 4.1
release?

Thanks,
Tal

sure but we had RC's before and the changes are minimal. I would expect
that this testing was already done but maybe this exactly is the
problem. If people see that new problems were found they stop testing
and wait for the next RC. And keep in mind that we had a Beta as well
where exactly this kind of testing is expected and where feedback is
welcome.

Maybe it is only my impression, but people like me, which use AOO more
then (only) test it and do it (tests) not in full time and (mostly) not
at weekends haven't any chance to review all needs and possibilities.
(Don't know if this is and understandable english sentence.)

And remember that we have to download and test the version before we can
and should vote.

it is a little longer (few hours) than the normal 72 hours vote.

The changes are limited compared to earlier RC's. What are you expecting
to find what you couldn't found before? Don't get me wrong, I am just
interested to learn what we can improve in the future.

When the release is out and we have relaxed a little we should reflect
what was good and where can we improve ...

+1 for releasing this package as AOO 4.1.0 also from me after building
the source package from scratch, checking the source code signature,
checking the repository revision vs. the source tarball, checking the
built and downloaded binaries on Mac and Linux/AMD64, running tests,
reviewing the RAT output, etc.

Sorry for the mis-threading of my vote, but due to a problem [1] with
the Apache mail server acting as a spam relay it was blacklisted by a
couple of Email providers, so the original vote invitation mail never
reached my inbox. Getting into the voting thread is now only possible by

We are voting only on the source release. The binaries are there only
for convenience but are technically not part of the release.
You can build and test the source independent of the snapshot servers.

I'd like to ask for a delay of the decision, since the snapshots website
wasn't available for a few weeks, and 4 days are not enough time for
testing.

Posted by Jürgen Schmidt <jo...@gmail.com>.
+1 from me.

I did my standard testing on 3 platforms, build the src release and
think it will be a very solid and good version. I used a snapshot build
(later the Beta, RC's) since weeks for my daily work ...
