Latest core file doesn't mention php at all:

(gdb) bt
#0 0xb7f81424 in __kernel_vsyscall ()
#1 0xb7d2565b in read () from /lib/libpthread.so.0

#7 0x09888498 in ?? ()
#8 0x09888408 in ?? ()
#9 0x00000000 in ?? ()

mod_backtrace does though.

Will do.

If the kernel crashes due to weird hardware I am told this is a kernel bug.

For future: if apache crashes due to a module crashing, is this an apache bug?

Your crashes happen in PHP code. So please open a bug at bugs.php.net.
