How to run Eclipse debugger on a CXF client

Hello,

I would like to run the Eclipse debugger, not just on my client stub but
also on the CXF source code, in particular the CXF interceptors (so I
can do line-by-line tracing, etc.) I think I know how to debug in
Eclipse (right-click the project and choose "Debug As..."), but what I
don't know is how to attach the CXF JAR files to its corresponding Java
source code so tracing can also be done within the CXF libraries. Has
anyone done this before?

Thanks,
Glen

I tried to show how to upgrade spring. But perhaps this should be separated.
For example right now spring 2.5 is out. So it is quite probable that
people want to switch at some point in the near future.

Best regards

Christian

Thanks, works like a charm. BTW, your sample pom.xml overrides the
default Spring 2.0.4 with 2.0.6, as shown with this comment:

<!-- Spring is directly included to override the version 2.0.4 cxf
brings in its own dependencies -->

Do we *have* to do this for some reason, or only if we want 2.0.6 over
2.0.4? For reasons of POM simplicity and maintenance, I wouldn't mind
relying on the CXF default, and waiting until it is explicitly upgraded.

Also, does anyone know if CXF 2.0.3 uses Spring 2.0.6 by now?
(Christian's sample pom[1] is on CXF 2.0.2.)

Thanks,
Glen

Depending on your default settings in maven you need an additional option:

mvn -DdownloadSources=true eclipse:eclipse

Hmmm...I think something else needs to be done to get the sources.
Using the exact file you provided on the Wiki, I tried mvn
eclipse:eclipse (twice) and I'm not getting the sources linked in. This
is a snippet of my .classpath file looks like:

  <classpathentry kind="var"
path="M2_REPO/org/apache/cxf/cxf-tools-common/2.0.2-incubator/cxf-tools-common-2.0.2-incubator.jar"/>
  <classpathentry kind="var"
path="M2_REPO/org/apache/cxf/cxf-common-utilities/2.0.2-incubator/cxf-common-utilities-2.0.2-incubator.jar"/>
  <classpathentry kind="var"
path="M2_REPO/org/apache/cxf/cxf-common-schemas/2.0.2-incubator/cxf-common-schemas-2.0.2-incubator.jar"/>
  <classpathentry kind="var"
path="M2_REPO/org/apache/geronimo/specs/geronimo-servlet_2.5_spec/1.1-M1/geronimo-servlet_2.5_spec-1.1-M1.jar"/>
  <classpathentry kind="var"
path="M2_REPO/org/apache/geronimo/specs/geronimo-ws-metadata_2.0_spec/1.1.1/geronimo-ws-metadata_2.0_spec-1.1.1.jar"/>

No sourcepath attributes like you have below. Any idea what else needs
to be done to get the sources in Maven?

Thanks,
Glen

When you have a correct pom (like in the example I put in the wiki) you
simply need to call
mvn eclipse:eclipse on the command line. Maven will then create an
eclipse .project and .classpath file
that lists all necessary binaries and sources. As an example I have
attached a .classpath file from my cxftest project.

But even if I were to do this with Maven, how would Eclipse make this
link between the source and binary? Does Eclipse read the Maven pom.xml
file to make this determination?--that seems doubtful. Because the
debugger is still Eclipse's--somehow the source code-bytecode linkage
would still need to be made within the IDE I think, no?

1) Fetch CXF tree from svn.
2) run mvn -Pfastinstall to set up all the generated sources.
2) In your workspace, attach the appropriate subtrees to the CXF jars.

The easiest way to do this is using maven. If you setup your cxf project
using maven then the maven source will automatically be attached to the
jars.
But you can of course do the same by hand. If you right click on the jar
and select Properties then there is a tab Java Source Attachment. You
then have to either select a source jar or the base directory of the
unpacked source tree.

For example when I use maven the cxf-frontend-jaxws jar is linked to the
source jar
"M2_REPO/org/apache/cxf/cxf-rt-frontend-jaxws/2.0.2-incubator/cxf-rt-frontend-jaxws-2.0.2-incubator-sources.jar"

I hope this helps.

Best regards

Christian
