shutdown.sh not reading port offset

Why is it in Geronimo 2.0.2, starting from command line, it is smart enough
to recognize a port offset and hence modify the RMI Port number but not
smart enough on shutdown to do the same? Is this somehow by design?
./bin/startup.sh
./bin/shutdown.sh --port <oops wrong port #, blame the new guy>
