> What can I do to help?
Provide a patch that fixes the problem (maybe default to a standard accept type if none is provided).
Also, it would be helpful to have exact steps to reproduce this problem. Provide an exact version (and maybe download location) of the webbrowser where the problem is seen. Provide exact steps to reproduce the problem -- currently using either the examples available in MyFaces or online at http://www.irian.at/myfaces/home.jsf.

Daniel,
Any chance you could reduce your application down to the smallest-possible example and attach it to the issue? Basically, just keep deleting code and tags until the problem goes away if anything else is deleted. You might even discover the cause of the problem yourself this way.

I do not see the problem using the myfaces examples. Only when I'm starting my own app. I'm using standard j2ee authentication mechanisms.. Perhaps I have an unusual configuration. Here's a copy of my web xml:

I located the problem: when I turn off my security constraint (I'm using container managed authentication (JAAS)) the problem goes away. My login entry point is /login.faces.
The problem is that the context that is being returned is null. Upon refresh, the faces context has been initialized so the problem disappears. Sort of makes sense that it's possible that faces context isn't being initialized in the right order when entering via the JAAS entry point.
if I replace line 996 in HtmlRendererUtils.java
contentTypeListString = (String)context.getExternalContext().getRequestHeaderMap().get("Accept");
with
if(context != null){
contentTypeListString = (String)context.getExternalContext().getRequestHeaderMap().get("Accept");
}
the problem goes away.
