   Variable length lists are still included as of now. The proposal I linked in my first comment has some running commentary about what changes to expect to the spec. If I've read it correctly, all lists will be variable length lists for serialization (and thus will include the mixin), but will have a max size defined that is used to pad out to when calculating tree hashes.
   
   This isn't finalized yet, and I wouldn't expect to see it make it into the SSZ spec for another 4 or so weeks. What's still unknown is, while all lists will have a max size for tree hash purposes, if some lists will still be serialized as a fixed size (w/o the mixin), or if all will have a length mixin.
   
   I will look into @cleishm comments shortly and get a little bit better more refactored version out sometime this weekend. Thanks for reviewing.
