Indexing with multiple threads

I am developing a index plugin that requires a high computational cost
to process the documents. I was trying and it seems not to use the
number of threads defined for fetching in the indexing process. Is it
possible to use multiple threads in indexing?, are they defined in a
especial way? Anybody has treated this issue before?
