Some changes for students and others

AS I work through Openmeetings I see these things that I believe should be
changed:
1. I want to give the participants the ability to write on board but I
think the X option should not be there for the participants because it
wipes out the modertator stuff too.

2. The direction arrows for the white board presentations should only be
there for the moderator or optional to turn on for the participants because
they can then move through the presentation and interrupt the moderator?

3. Participants should not be allowed to clear chats, that should be a
option of the moderator especially everyones chats

Question: If I have not chatted with a participant - How do I do the first
chat with them?

Thanks
Don

Donald,

You have raised some good points, I would like you to consider another
issue or maybe it is too issues. I have thought long and hard but I am
not sure how best to resolve this issue.

Issues caused by participants having different screen resolutions, e.g.
1027x768, 1260x800, 1920x1080 etc.
When participants have differing screen resolutions there is often a
need for participants to change the zoom of their screen and to scroll
the Whiteboard up and down or side to side. But the only way to allow
them to do this is to give them full "Draw on the Whiteboard"
permissions, which as you have stated, has its issues because they can
then acciently or purposely interfer with the presentation.

In response to your statements;

AS I work through Openmeetings I see these things that I believe should
be changed:

1. I want to give the participants the ability to write on board but I
think the X option should not be there for the participants because it
wipes out the modertator stuff too.

I understand what you are saying, is the "Single undo at a time also an
issue?"

Even without clarification on the above question I ask, I think I would
have to say;

"I agree with the need for this change"

2. The direction arrows for the white board presentations should only be
there for the moderator or optional to turn on for the participants
because they can then move through the presentation and interrupt the
moderator?

"I agree with the need for this change"

3. Participants should not be allowed to clear chats, that should be a
option of the moderator especially everyones chats

"I agree with the need for this change"

Changes to who has particulary Whiteboard rights - Moderators, Presenters and Participants

Posted by George Kirkham <gk...@co2crc.com.au>.
Hi,

I have raised the below change requests to address these changes.

When considering the changes I can see that there are three different
people in a meeting;

1) Moderators who have total control over the meeting and all of
its participants

2) Presenters who are presenting to the meeting. There are times
when we may have five presenters, two people may work together for a
particular presentation but usually each presenter takes their own turn
to make their presentation. It can be that you do not want these people
to have full moderator abilities.

3) Participants to whom the presenters are presenting their
presentation. During the meeting participants may or may not be given
the rights to contribute to the presentation or to ask questions. They
may be given the ability to "Draw on the Whiteboard" so that they can
add or highlight an area of interest/discussion.

I can see that it would be worthwhile to have both a "User is a
Moderator" and a "User is a Presenter" options in OpenMeetings, do
others agree, or should all presenters also be moderators?

All participant changes;

OPENMEETINGS-368 - Allow users to zoom their view of the Whiteboard by
default and not being controlled by "Draw on the Whiteboard" permissions

OPENMEETINGS-373 - By default all users should be able to scroll their
Whiteboard, and doing so should not affect any other participants
Whiteboard.

Presenter level changes;

OPENMEETINGS-369 - Please make the "Clear Whiteboard" tool only
accessible to Moderators and not to participants who have "Draw on the
Whiteboard" rights

OPENMEETINGS-370 - Please make the ability to change slides/pages of an
uploaded document only available to Moderators, and not to participants
who have "Draw on the Whiteboard" rights

OPENMEETINGS-371 - Please make the ability to create new Whiteboards or
change the Whiteboard only available to Moderators, and not to
participants who have "Draw on the Whiteboard" rights has been
successfully created.

OPENMEETINGS-374 - Only Moderators should have the ability to upload,
add, delete, or load files and folders.

Moderator (only) level changes;

OPENMEETINGS-372 - Please make the ability to "clear the Chat window"
only available to Moderators, and not to participants who have "Draw on
the Whiteboard" rights

Thanks,

George Kirkham

To restate the possible changes suggested by Donald (and include a
fourth suggestion);

1) Have it that by default Users always have the ability to zoom
their Whiteboard (since "it only affects each person's screen not the
group")

2) The abilities to "Clear whiteboard" (whiteboard tool), "change
pages/slides" (Properties window), and "clear the chat window" (Chat
window) will be Moderator only permissions.

3) Giving Users "Draw on the Whiteboard" permissions will give them
the ability to use the "Undo" tool, but not the "Clear whiteboard" tool.
They would get access to the properties window for changing fonts,
colours and sizes but not for changing slides/pages.

4) The ability to scroll the whiteboard - As user scrolling
affects all users, is it possible to have users able to scroll only
their own Whitebaord, but moderators scroll everyone's Whiteboard ?
This solution seems the best if it is not too hard to code. If so the
users could have scroll and zoom ability by default as both these two
abilities would only affect their own whiteboard.

Please read and review the above changes, and let us know if there are
any issues that could arise if these changes are implemented.

Thanks,

To restate the possible changes suggested by Donald (and include a
fourth suggestion);

Thanks,

RE: Some changes for students and others

Posted by George Kirkham <gk...@co2crc.com.au>.
Please check with one moderator and one standard user who is given "Draw
on the whiteboard" permissions so that they can zoom and scroll their
screen, and you will see the below issues.

1) Do you realise that users do not have the zoom ability, unless
they are given full "Draw on whiteboard" permissions and then they can
affect other peoples screens? So at the moment they cannot have the
ability to zoom without also having the ability affecting other people's
screens.

2) While you are correct when you say "Zoom is not necessary to
control, it only affects each person's screen not the group", please
check, you will find that when a user scrolls their screen, they also
scroll everyone's screen, including the moderators screen. So after
zooming, you need to scroll the screen but then you affect everyones
screen.

3) When the moderator zooms their screen, the screens of other
users are not zoomed, so if the moderator zooms and then scrolls the
document in the whiteboard, the document in the users screens is not
zoomed and because it remains smaller that the moderator's screen.

When the moderator scrolls their screen the document in the users
screens scrolls off out of view. This is quite frustrating and the only
thing to do is to give everyone full "Draw on the whiteboard"
permissions.

.

Thanks,

George Kirkham

Alexei,

Do you have any comments on Donald's points below.

I would have included a fourth point, similar to point 2, that there
should be

4) a separate option for the ability to control the zoom and scrolling
of the window

I have had uses who need to zoom into an uploaded document but they only
way is to give them the ability to draw on the Whiteboard, which also
gives them the ability to change pages/slides.

I may have once seen the issue where someone, not realising what the
control did, cleared the entire whiteboard, but it did not occur to me
that standard users do not need this ability, it should be left to the
moderator as Donald has suggested.

So without adding any further user options, and just rearranging the
permissions, would the following work well?

a) Moderator only has 1) "Clear whiteboard" option, 2) ability to
change pages, 3) clear the chat window.

b) Draw on the whiteboard gives the user the ability to the
whiteboard tools except for "Clear Whiteboard". They would be able to
select colours and font sizes, but not to change slides.

c) But what about the ability to change the zoom of your own
window or to scroll up or down. This is important for people working
from small screens (e.g. from laptops). Should this be controlled via
the ability to draw on the whiteboard? Or should it be an option all of
its own. Are there any circumstances when you would not want users to
have this ability? I have had the issue that on my large screen I was
unable to scroll the document up high enough for a user (who had a small
screen) to be able to see all of the document.

Thanks,

George Kirkham

AS I work through Openmeetings I see these things that I believe should
be changed:

1. I want to give the participants the ability to write on board but I
think the X option should not be there for the participants because it
wipes out the modertator stuff too.

2. The direction arrows for the white board presentations should only be
there for the moderator or optional to turn on for the participants
because they can then move through the presentation and interrupt the
moderator?

3. Participants should not be allowed to clear chats, that should be a
option of the moderator especially everyones chats

Question: If I have not chatted with a participant - How do I do the
first chat with them?

Thanks

Don

Zoom is not necessary to control, it only affects each person's screen not the group. I would leave it the way it is. The rest of your suggestions are great.
