You're right!  But if you specify the -i flag, tar will happily get the files 
out of the archive for you.  Someone more experienced with tar than I might be 
able to shed some light on what's happening here, but my guess is that it 
relates to our use of a tar on a different platform (RH 7.2) to make the 
archives.  Anyway, there seems to be an effective workaround so there are 
probably other bugs we should focus on...
