With all respect to shapeblue team, contributions and efforts,

-1 with this current PR. Adding "official" in the source section doesn't make sense. This is the main site of the project, it's expected to be the official releases. For third party repos, I don't think apt-get.eu repos should be listed there as it's maintain by the cloudstack community not a single entity such as shapeblue one. shapeblue could be listed in a third party section, but why a shapeblue repo, how different it is compare to the community one or event Citrix cloudplatform. Then why cloudplatform would not be listed there too?

So far, I saw lots of confusion introduced in all the documentation regarding repo urls because urls keep swapping between shapeblue.com and cloudstack.apt-get.eu between release. It make documentation a bit weird and look like an unstable project. I don't think shapeblue.com repos should be listed in the general cloudstack documentation, but can be listed in a "third party distributions" section of the download page.

I don't see shapeblue.com repo as a community repo but as a vendor repo, as oppose to cloudstack.apt-get.eu which is a community driven repo not backed by a vendor.

Maybe we could have download page heading like this?:
```
Source Release
Community Packages
Third-Party Distributions
```

@karuturi there is the issue with noredist under ASF though, how about we move this as a discuss thread to dev@? there are more changes that could be discussed while at it (like separating packaging from the product release)

@abhinandanprateek
I think they were added silently in the first place.
We are doing one rpm build as a community for user convenience(which was discussed long long ago and agreed to use apt-get.eu for the same).
What value does it add to have the same rpms with different name on a different domain?

The reason is, none outside shapeblue has access to those repos and with users reporting issues on them, it will be difficult to maintain.
Whereas with apt-get.eu, many outside the sponsored company has access and can be easily maintained by community (through jenkins jobs and direct access) incase there are issues.

@karuturi reference to the vote/agreement regarding apt-get.eu repositories being agreed as some sort of "official" distribution. I do not recall the community coming to any agreement regarding package distribution. From a community perspective, it can't be official unless we are voting out the packages.

If the repos are listed as 3rd party, I don't see where community access is an issue. The community is saying, "We are listed these repos for your connivence. Please be aware that the packages they contain have not been tested and voted on by the community." Regardless of the community's access to apt-get.eu, the packages it contains are not official artifacts of the community.

As I see it either we do not put any non-official build on the project page. If we are doing it for users convenience we should all such repositories that are being build by community for greater good.
I fail to see why it will confuse user or is not good for overall community well being. Why should anyone in the community be given a preference over another just because there domain name does not sound like a company name.
Other than that the listings were quietly removed without even a proper discussion on the mailing list. I think this should have been discussed and them acted upon.

@remibergsma If we state that packages are 3rd party it gives sense (imho) to inform who makes those packages. the regular ones from apt-get.eu could be mentioned as 'Community provided' or something similar.

All in all I agree that we have to pick up the work to move it under the ASF umbrella

According to @ke4qqq we should be able to use packages.apache.org (see https://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/cloudstack-dev/201506.mbox/%3CCAKprHVYH+m-A2g=cj709DyX2j28X3rOe6hqAUGvcWgBWccj0WQ@mail.gmail.com%3E) to distribute both rpms and possibly the systemvm under ASF umbrella

The only exception being that we can't disitribute noredist builds, which is a pity, and leaves a demand for non-official packages

@karuturi shapeblue folks are also part of community like citrix or sbp folks. by that definition the shapeblue packages are as good. it is just that shapeblue provides resources and infra to host these packages.
Overall as @jburwell mentioned none of them are official.

@remibergsma as a project we don't ship official repository or packages yet, until that happens we need to state that the packages/link we've provided are 3rd party and not endorsed by Apache (as a project) similar to what Cassandra does, and I think we should allow anyone who wants to share repositories as a convenience for users. Both cloudstack.apt-get/wido's and shapeblue's packages repos are 3rd party.

Stating 3rd party I agree with. I just don't want the confusion of having different company names and people saying on the list they use "the shape blue version". That already happens right now and only brings confusion.

A mirror system filled by Jenkins (so controlled by community) and served on a generic domain name with cname mirrors (sponsored by companies) I think would be great. Happy to sponsor that.

well, it got evolved during the 4.0 release and no one objected.
May be, first we should start a discuss/vote first on what can we include.

community maintenance comes in because issues are reported on users@/dev@ list and users do ask questions on which rpms/templates to use when there are multiple. When the source bits are same and build in the same way, why should we list another one?

I completely agree that they are not official. But, not official and community build is different. As I said before, I see it as temporary spot before we get them in ASF.

I think it is quite fair. The source is the official release, and the packages are not official.
I don't know that we will ever be able to offer official packages, because our official release is the source.

The change makes this a bit more clear.
It does bring confusion to some extent, because people will ask "what's the difference between this repo or that repo"....

Cassandra does this to advertize Datastax repo, Mesos does it with the mesosphere repos...

I don't see it as a major problem, as long as shapeblue folks support users that use their packages and ask questions about them on the list.

So +1 (even though I see remi's point as well).

@abhinandanprateek Please dont get me wrong. This is not a question of good or bad. I am not denying anyone's part in community neither am I saying that x is good and y is bad. I agreed multiple times above that these are not official but just a temporary spot until we get to ASF.
I am just saying that none outside the sponsored company has access which is an issue for the community. I understand that these are the same packages being served from a different location with which I dont see any added advantage. So, why confuse users?
If there is time, if we can put effort to pull them in ASF that would be great help for the community.

As erik mentioned, this should move to dev@. noredist is definitely a problem which needs to be discussed along with others.

€0,02: I think a great benefit of having shapeblue supplying their own packages is them being able to backort features for their customers. I would like them to host those 'feature-enriched' old releases on apache github even but not in our maintenance branches. The packages for those are of course to be build and their location needs to be published. I don't care where and how, just saying.

@karuturi the repos currently listed on the [Downloads page](http://cloudstack.apache.org/downloads.html) are not under community control. Furthermore, the manner in which the page is laid out, it appears as though the packages and repos are endorsed by the community. However, at no point did the community vote out those packages. As such, the pages must indicate that the packages and repos listed are not community endorsed or managed. Finally, from a fairness perspective, we should not be picking which 3rd party repos are listed. We either list all maintained 3rd party repos or we list none. The list should include a description of each repository to inform decision about which repository to use (if any).

@remibergsma the packages distributed by ShapeBlue are the baseline releases built noredist. There are no additional patches or changes made to them. The reality is that many users need at least one noredist plugin. As a community, we will never be able to distribute the pre-built noredist plugins for legal reasons. The ShapeBlue repositories address this important user issue.

@bhaisaab what do you want to achieve? What's different with the shapeblue packages? Why mentioning company names? It's highly confusing if you ask me, especially for users. I'd prefer one repo with packages on a cloudstack.org or apache.org domain. Until that happens, I like cloudstack.apt-get.eu as it is a generic domain. Let's not make this a company list with all different repos, please.
