[GitHub] [skywalking] gedw99 opened a new issue #6123: main server ( oapo) in golang ?

gedw99 opened a new issue #6123:
URL: https://github.com/apache/skywalking/issues/6123

I noticed that lots of the other repos for skywalking is written in golang and vue.

But its seems the main server uses java with elastic and TIDB, influx and a few other bits

Is there any wish / plan for the main server to be in golang ?

We use victoria metrics at the moment, instead in influx also.
The other bits that can replace java / kafka are NATS, LiftBridge for messaging. https://github.com/liftbridge-io/liftbridge
   TIDB is golang of course.
For Elastic we use bleve with https://github.com/mosuka/blast

Anyway i am just raising this and dont want to get in a language war.

   > I noticed that lots of the other repos for skywalking is written in golang and vue.

Maybe just a few as far as I know, SkyWalking-CLI, SkyWalking-Satellite, and some (maybe 2) other CLI tools, which are best suit for Golang, we have many other projects written in Java, Python, C#, NodeJS, etc.. So your conclusion is not quite correct IMO.

   > Is there any wish / plan for the main server to be in golang ?

I don't think this is a good question in an open source project, especially for such a mature project with very complicated details, your question potentially asks the maintainers to rewrite the project entirely in another language, which I don't think is feasible and worthwhile if there is no particular reasons that we MUST do.

I know . But we ( the software team ) are looking for a golang server to
run it all too . We use opentelemetry and Victoria metrics and graph ans
   currently.

So it would be a waste of our energy to help on only the golang stuff like
   cli etc .

Have to be frank about this - hope you can sympathize...

   Ok fair enough.

At least we know and I appreciate the straight answer. Skywalker looks
   awesome btw

I can’t commit to working on this if it’s Java based but I wish the
   project the best of course
