How about a checkpoint/log size threshold. If your log exceeds that size
log an event, and then clean things up.
 
Its a quick, configurable check, and pretty uncomplicated. The
complicated part is auto-adjusting the check up so that you ensure it
occurs fairly infrequently. (Once a day or more) :)
